Physical Description of Character: Hatori looks like many healthy men, standing an even 182 cm (six feet) and weighing around 69 kg (152 lbs). His black hair is tended to closely though is worn longer in the front in such a way that it covers his left eye which is bad. Usually his green eyes and face are left expressionless and his manner of dress gives him a professional but distant look that is somewhat somber.

Point in Canon:Volume 22, immediately before the curse breaks

Personality: Hatori has very dry and serious personality. The single mature member of the Mabuchi trio he keeps their antics in check before they’re carried too far. Many say that he is distant and cold, which is the result of a strict childhood in addition to events which linger on his mind from the past. Hatori also has is lacking when it comes to a sense of humor, and though while small it is often a quiet humor consisting of off handed remarks. Hatori often takes what others say in jest seriously such as the time Mayuko told him that she was hot look at him in a suit; the next day made it a point to wear something different so she wouldn’t get hot looking at him. In keeping with his distant personality often Hatori will refrain from indulging in basic human needs around others such as sleeping, preferring to do so in private; though he is also an avid reader and spends much of his time reading when not tending to Akito or other member of the Sohma family.
As the dragon of the zodiac Hatori also has a complex when it comes to his zodiac form, steaming from the fact that the seahorse is referred to as ‘the dragon’s bastard offspring’ and the other zodiac members find it funny. He goes so far as to break his composure and threaten Shigure when the other tries to reveal his animal shape to Tohru; showing how insecure he is about it. While he does not need to have the exact same conditions as a Seahorse in his zodiac form he does correct those who panic stating that they would have killed a real seahorse had they taken the same actions. Also of the zodiac members Hatori is one of the most loyal to Akito and one of the few who have not come to resent the head of the family over time, if Akito tells him to do something Hatori will carry it out without hesitation and with a seemly indifferent attitude.

History of the Character: Hatori was born into the Sohma family through a line that consisted of previous generations of the Sohma family doctors; his father was responsible for tending to the head of the family. Growing up, both of his parents were very strict and his home life was not very warm; which possibly lead to some of Hatori’s overly-serious nature. Another part of Hatori’s seriousness comes from the fact that he also lost his mother to an illness while in elementary school. As one of the Sohma family members possessed by a zodiac spirit Hatori was kept close to the head of the family and was one of the three who was alive at the time of Akito’s birth and thus one of only four zodiac members to know that Akito is a woman.

Hatori inherited the memory suppression technique directly from his father. Which is not necessarily a special power, but rather a technique that has been handed down in him family for generations; working similar to hypnosis. Having grown up close to Ayame and Shigure, both of which are also possessed by zodiac spirits Hatori is implied to be the youngest of the Mabudachi Trio though all three are approximately the same age having been in the same year and classes. He was the one that would keep Ayame and Shigure in check when they started to go too far, and became the one person that Ayame would listen to. It was also in high school though that Hatori’s father passed away from an illness as his mother had years before.
As the Sohma family doctor, his main responsibility is to look after Akito, in addition to treating the other zodiac members. When Yuki was a child Hatori was responsible for treating his bronchitis, Hatori also was ordered to erase the memories of all of Yuki’s friends and classmates around the same time when the child accidently transformed in front of them. If his father or Akito ordered it, Hatori would unhesitatingly erase someone’s memories. It was because of the indifference that he showed in carrying out the tasks given to him that Akito said he was as cold as snow; though it does come to light later that Hatori regrets having to do so.
During his time as the Sohma family doctor that he is appointed and assistant from within the family, Kana Sohma who Hatori gradually falls for due to her cheerful innocence that would later be echoed in Tohru. Even as he become closer to her Hatori keeps a slight distance due to his curse, knowing that even though she is part of the Sohma family since she is not a member of the zodiac if they ever embraced he would transform. Though eventually it happens the two of them become closer and eventually Hatori approaches Akito about the relationship and asking for permission to marry Kana, which instantly dooms the two lovers. Afraid of losing Hatori, a member of the zodiac, Akito went into a frenzy attacking Hatori over Kana. Kana, who saw him hurt so badly in front of her, losing part of the sight in his left eye from the attack, tortured herself over the incident continuously until she broke down and said it would be best had she and Hatori never met. Eventually to ease her suffering and at Akito’s words Hatori is forced to suppress all of Kana’s memories of him, completely erasing all the time the two spent together. Rather than blaming Akito for what happened or even Kana, Hatori sees the incident as his own fault and a punishment for erasing other people’s memories. It is from that moment that Hatori says that he is waiting for spring, a significant symbol of the love that he had with Kana who had asked him what the snow became when it melted.
His first bit of reprieve came when he finally met Tohru at the main house and the two of them speak in private. The girl’s words and nature remind him of Kana and cause him to smile. Throughout the time that Tohru remains with the Sohma household Hatori extends his services to her as needed in addition to the other family members though his main priority remains to Akito. Though later he is confronted by Ayame and Shigure who attended Kana’s wedding to another man, Hatori makes it apparent that he has let her go insisting that even if they were together again he would only miss her. Shigure though has his own plans and manipulates Hatori and Mayuko, who had a crush on Hatori in school, into running into each other. While Tohru reminded him of Kana and made him lighten a little it was Mayuko’s ability to cry in his place that further lightens Hatori’s heart as he begins to let the snow melt and a possible budding romance form.
Ultimately Hatori’s is one of the last curses to be broken, a mixture of sorrow and tears washing over him, though even freed from the curse he remains the Sohma family doctor watching as everything changes.
